Wise men and women have known for centuries that their image either opens, or closes doors.  Recent research confirms this wisdom of the ages, with detailed sophisticated studies via Master’s Degree Thesises; many of which have carefully measured the differences in responses and outcomes, based on the clothing worn by the “protagonist”!

 I”ve found the metaphor of Military uniforms useful in discussing how we might “rank ourselves” in civilian society.  I think everyone would agree that a greater level of respect is immediately granted to a high ranking General, decorated with metals and badges, than to a Private. So it is in the civilian world, with a man in a cheap suit, or one that appears to be custom made of the finest fabric and workmanship. He “appears” to be someone of great importance,

The Presence of a Leader, in terms of the combination of a perfect fit, expensive looking workmanship and well co-ordinated accessories, projects a level of class, taste, which sets that person apart from the norm.  If one doesn’t know the individual personally  or by reputation, they might take notice that that person “stands out” as someone who “appears” to be someone of importance!

More often than not, that high level looking person is treated accordingly, from the start.  It can start when they walk into a room; immediately attending to them, perhaps even interrupting “work in progress” with someone else.  Someone less well dressed, may just be left unattended to wait until everyone is free.

And, so it goes…in the making of a sale, in the level of referrals that are garnered for new prospective clients referred by this most recent client, etc.  The compound effect, whether it’s “won” opportunities, or “Lost” opportunities, is “huge”, as the years go by.

To some degree,”appearing to be successful”, facilitates, becoming more and more successful.

There is a “Look” that not everyone knows how to create, which is a combination of “assets” that form together to make someone, look like a leader, and enjoy the benefits that come from appearing as such.
